Aug 2023

We are embarking on yet another program of incredible content creation, and expanding the Nearmap aerial capture program to cover up to 95% of the Australian population.
Organisations across many sectors – including government, insurance, architecture, construction and engineering - have long relied on Nearmap and our rich archive of historical imagery and capture program to provide the truth on the ground. And naturally, they want more.
Thanks to an increased investment in our market-best coverage program, and the capture efficiency and increased productivity of our new proprietary aerial camera system, HyperCamera3 – Nearmap users will, in time, be able to access regularly updated, city-scale, high-resolution aerial imagery location data from 82 new locations across Australia.

Breaking down the Australian capture program expansion

We’ll be boosting our capture network over the coming year to include:
  • Almost 23,000 sq km of new, additional unique captured footprint for standard aerial imagery each year, totalling 168,000 sq kms of unique captured footprint annually. This climbs to over 500,000 sq kms of annual coverage when including multiple and recurring captures of the same areas
  • Almost 19,000 sq km of new, higher-resolution vertical imagery each year**,** at an even sharper resolution of 5.6cm per pixel (50% increase in coverage), for a total of 80,000 sq kms coverage annually
  • Almost 60,000 sq km of overall unique coverage of premium content types (32% increase in coverage): oblique, 3D, terrain data, point cloud, and true ortho
Additionally, up to 87% of Australia’s population will be covered by our high-resolution vertical (5.6cm GSD) imagery, a 9% increase from the current plan.
And up to 86% of Australia’s population will be covered by our oblique, 3D, terrain data, point cloud, and true ortho content, a 9% increase from where we are today.
But what does it actually take to increase the vertical coverage by almost 5%? Capturing 82 new locations in mostly regional and rural areas of Australia, including:
  • 25 in New South Wales
  • 2 in the Northern Territory
  • 17 in Queensland
  • 11 in South Australia
  • 1 in Tasmania
  • 19 in Victoria
  • 6 in Western Australia
We will also be capturing oblique, 3D, terrain data, point cloud and true ortho content in 43 separate new regions:
  • 13 in New South Wales
  • 1 in the Northern Territory
  • 12 in Queensland
  • 3 in Tasmania
  • 13 in Victoria
  • 1 in Western Australia
To paint a picture – we’ll be providing almost continuous aerial coverage of the main road route up the East Coast of Australia – from Boydtown just south of Eden, NSW to Curra, just north of Gympie, QLD; over 1,600 km of continuous terrain.

What about ImpactResponse?

In addition to the standard capture program, we’re committing to cover up to 15,000 sq km for our post-catastrophe program, Nearmap ImpactResponse.
Nearmap is the first and only aerial imagery and location analytics provider in Australia with a dedicated capture program for natural disasters, providing high-quality, city-scale aerial imagery and location data within days of major natural catastrophes – including the 2019/20 East Coast bushfires, and 2022 East Coast “rain bomb” – to better support community recovery efforts, and expedite insurance claims.

What does this mean for Nearmap Customers?

It means access to more parcels, roads, infrastructure, communities, coast lines, rivers and catchments. It means more local government areas, more state-wide coverage, and more national coverage.
And for people in these towns being covered for the first time – from Exmouth, WA, and Katherine in the NT, across to Port Douglas in QLD, Yamba, NSW, and down to George Town, TAS – it gives them a first-ever opportunity leverage Nearmap content and tools to make the most of their businesses.
